I'm relatively new to the Sony SLT cameras, with an A57.  Because of past experience with the Canon 18-135 IS, and earlier with the Sigma 18-125, I went for the Sony 18-135 in combination with the Sony 55-300.  I am extremely pleased with both lenses in all respects.  Note the very large range of overlap with these two lenses.  That really minimizes the amount of lens swapping you need to do.  Something for you to consider.

I ended up with the same combo, and like you found the overlap to be pretty useful.  Neither are particularly heavy lenses, and both have good (most of the time) reports/reviews.  Being retired, poor, and having a bad back I think the 18-135/55-300 combination is great and with my A65 should last long term.  There are sharper lenses, but usually are far more expensive and much heavier (IMO).
