This doesn't seem sharp to me...

Cute shot, who cares about "perfect" focus?

I took this image with my Canon 50d, in AI SERVO, center focus point and my 70-200 f2.8 IS, with a flash.

1/1000, f2.8, iso 100, 165mm. No PP, straight out of the camera.

Nailed the focus pretty much right between the eyes. He was just on a swing moving back and forth. It doesnt seem sharp, his face seems out of focus to me even though the focus point was smack in the middle of his face.

What do you think?

This is a cropped version of his face.

Really enjoyed this shot - except perhaps for the unfortunate cutting of the ends of the fingers of the right hand.  It is cute, it tells a story, there is a mood to it, ou name it - it "works" for me.

(1) Do I see the eyes in perfect focus?  Nope, they're not.  The top of the hat is in better "perfect" focus - likely helped by much better lighting vs the shade over the face.

(2) Does the lack of "perfect" focus ruin the shot?  Not for me.  If I knew how to do such things in PP, I might decide to lessen the brightness on the hat and perhaps also on the boy's right shoulder.

(3) user error?  You do say that you focused between the eyes.  When there is such shallow DOF I thin you have to be very careful - the tip of the nose seems in better focus.  I'm not saying that I would have done better, but in similar circumstances I tend to set a single focus point on just one eye.

(4) finally, I'm not a Canon expert but it might just be that the 50D isn't really able to track focus in such circumstances with relatively low light levels on the subject and such shallow DOF.  But again, you'd have to ask Canon experts.
