I have the 496RC2 but don't use it any more. I, too, got the 054 magnesium head to solve a problem.

The 496RC2 worked just fine with my D70, D80, and D7000 (including battery grip) with lenses under 200mm. But with an 80-400 or Tamron 200-500 on any of these bodies, I got too many (almost 100%) shots with unsatisfactory sharpness. After a conversation at a local camera shop, I became convinced the small quick release plate of the 496 was a vulnerability for long lenses - allowing small-scale fore-aft vibration, apparently. The 054 head has a long release plate, about 1.75" wide by 3.5" long, and it solved the sharpness problem.

Bear in mind that the 496 worked just fine with all combinations of bodies and lenses until I put the long lens with the front-end torque it causes. I don't know if my D7000 with its battery grip and 16-85 VR has a weight in the ballpark of your D600 with 24-120, but even with the long lenses, the simple weight carrying capability of the 496 was never an issue.
