Hm okay, that makes sense. I was just trying to keep the background as blurred as possible. Maybe f4 or 5.6 would have been better?

You'll need to try it and see, but shallow depth of field can can blur parts of the subject as well as the background, so you need to be really sure about what you're focusing on.
