Wow.  Lots of good information, some may be more that the OP asked for.

Short answers - yes there are benefits to using two flashers but they may not be what you need as has already been explained.

1 -For the same shot 2 flashes will recycle faster no matter what the power source.

2- You will double you light output (if that's whats called for)

3- ETTL will still work if set up correctly.

4 - You can point them in slightly different directions and increase your area of coverage

I intend to use (2)550s this week on a double bracket to a shoot ballroom dance exhibition and challenge.  I'll be using 3 YN-622's (one for each flash and a trigger) - rechargeable batteries - an external battery pack for each flash on a light stand.  I need to be able to fire rapidly (but not long bursts) and use a smaller f stop (f14 or so) so I get more flash and less ambient into the shot in order to use the flash to stop motion.  As tested this combination stops motion better than my AB 400 or Ab 800 studio flash units because of the shorter flash duration.
