Canon 100mm 2.8 usm question

Yes, if the lens you're considering can focus at infinity.  The problem is that 20 feet is pretty far when photographing a small bird.  A 100 mm lens is good to about 7 feet, and much beyond that you'll be relying on extreme cropping and lucky focusing, which a 550D camera isn't good at providing.  You really should be considering a non-macro telephoto lens, such as the Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6.
