FWIW ..  on ANY camera I've ever had ...and I've had MANY indeed.. I've NEVER had the Focus-Assist lamp working..it's just too much distraction if you are taking live subects for sure.. and frankly just not what I want anyway.   But on my G15...I've just tried it and was a little surprsed to see that indoors as I am now. focussing at anything at such as anywhere between say 4 feet and 8 feet or so, the blue flash you see on the LCD is at least 1/2-inch or so above the small green center box..yet it still gives me spot-on focussing IN the green box and exactly where I want it to be - and it does it well enough so that I just never have any problems with focus not being exactly where I want it to be.. especially of course when I'm shooting a close-up pic of any kind. So it is still not a feature that is of the least interest or concern to me.

I'd not worry, frankly..if you get focus WHERE you want to anyway.

Eric, thanks to you ( and edu T) for your response.

Yours is EXACTLY the same as my situation. I have not experienced a focus problem, either, but feel bouretter now.

Alan -

As I said above .. I NEVER use the Focus Assist light 'ON' at any time and have never been bothered with any out-of-focus shots because of this strange behaviour of the Assist light.. but now you've brought it into the open I just wonder if indeed the setting we both seem to have, is in fact perfectly as desired.  Think of it..it IS described as Focus ASSIST.. that does NOT mean the light has to be precisely ON the subject of your shot..it is to provide some light as an ASSIST to focussing.. frankly if you were shooting on a person I think the last thing any subject would want is to have a light flash in their eyes - the most likely spot for focus.. so maybe this "off-centre" light flash IS the best (if you HAVE to use it !!)..frankly - as also said - for many years I've simply not wanted it 'ON' nor have I missed it for exact focussing on any camera I've used.
