I think it is a little more nuanced in that the  the true professionals in fields other than portraits and weddings are still enjoying the respect of their clients.

The displacement of the portrait/wedding photographers is almost completely the consequence of camera phones. Not that they have any significant quality advantage but rather their ubiquity has jaded the public to the concept of paying for event images.

The number of freebie newcomers will slow down and their reputation for unreliability will become known. The pro will be valued once again, albeit for a lesser fee.

True maybe, or people will never feel that they need better than a phone picture.
