That's indeed how I use the selftimer & AEB combination on my 5DII. I don't do any real HDR though, just blending exposures. I do quite a lot of interiorphotography and that combination is very useful.

Of course I could buy a remote, but that's one more thing that you have to carry around. And I often walk around with the camera on the tripod. A dangling remote is pretty annoying
