What you can do anywhere is to mask Mark and number on the body with black scotch

And mask any mark on gear (yellow mark on neck strap)

that's minimal to go safe...

also you can change Nikon mark with Canon Mark, you wil get no problem anymore...

==> that's only joke !!

I'm curious, why does masking the model and brand deter thieves?  Are they camera snobs who only steal certain makes and models?

I doubt it. Fully black cameras scream 'pro' photojournalist. Smart thieves would target those black boxes rather than the regular blingy cheap looking look.

Actually, thieves will steal anything that's easy to run with, conceal and fence. Big professional cameras are not. They have serial numbers and will be reported to the police. The biggest target by far is smart phones.

The only issue with a big expensive camera is that it probably implies you have a lot of other interesting stuff on you.

London has relatively few organised gangs into street robbery. Too busy selling drugs, stealing luxury cars to order, fraud, money laundering and trafficking. They operate behind seemingly legitimate operations (restaurants etc) and don't like attention.

99% of pickpockets and street thieves are lone opportunists or small gangs. They are not likely to encourage confrontation and will take only what's easy to dispose of. A large SLR is worth no more than a mobile phone when fenced and is much harder to deal with.
