Even though camera lenses are more complex, after all this discussion no one bothers to post the equation for a simple lens:

1/f = 1/do + 1/di

f = focal length

do = object distance

di = image distance

This is why a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens no matter whether it's in front of a 35mm, APS-C, Super-16, etc film or digital sensor....In fact, it can be just in front of your face, that lens still has a 50mm focal length no matter how long you stare at it....;-)
