Macro lenses are a mixed bag.  i have the nikon 60 which is the sharpest lens i have ever used.  i put a cheap extension tube on it and i could focus in on sub-atomic particles (well not really).  the lens is great for flowers, spiders and stuff that doesnt move too fast but its drwback is it is the slowest focusing lens i own.

looking at the size of the butterflies i would rather use a relatively fast focusing lens like my 16-85 closer to 85 of a 70-200.  focusing that close you will never see the building even at f11

i salute you for getting that close to a butterfly with a 35.  you must be more graceful than me.
