85 f/1.8 doesn't focus very close

Now I know that this thread is an old one, however I would just like to ask those who have photographed newborns whether further investment is really needed in lenses. I intend to shoot with my 50mm 1.4 in the early stages using shallow DOF and natural light where possible. However I would like to get those close-ups of feet , hands etc and was debating buying a Nikon 105vr 2.8 Micro. What puts me off is the weight and the fact that I am not really a macro photographer, so would like to use it as a portrait lens as the baby grows. Would I be better off looking for a close focus lens which is much better as a portrait lens rather than a macro lens that doubles as a portrait lens? I am not sure what options I have? Does the 70-200f4 focus close enough to be an option...does the 85mm 1.8?

At minimum focus, the 85 f/1.8 covers 6 1/2 X 4 1/2 on my DX camera; on FX I calculate 10 X 6 1/2. Most other lenses will shoot tighter at minimum focus.
