Take a look at Adobe Lightroom. Yes I know there is an unholy row going on at the moment over Photoshop subscription but Lightroom is a very good product which was designed to help manage images. You can download a trial version to see if it would work for you.

It will take time to add your own keywords to your images but you can do it in batches. Once that is done you have a very powerful tool. You can search for, say, all photos of Bermuda, of Aunty Jean in Bermuda, Aunty Jean in Bermuda in 2002, Bermuda taken with a specific camera or lens, etc. etc. You can still browse by folder too of course so you lose nothing.

well adobe did say they were keeping LR as a stand alone product so thats a good thing.
