Hi all,

I hadn't taken any portraits for a few weeks and I was having withdrawals. Nobody would pose, so it was me again. My mom hates these, but she also has known me for a very long time so she knows that these don't really match my personality. I wanted to see what everyone else thinks, since you will probably be a lot more objective.

I don't hate them, Sarah. I do not think they look much like the "you" I envision from previous posts - could be convinced they were someone else - but I think they are beautiful portraits.

They are both good, I like the IR effect. But the 1st pose doesn't "do" much, not enuff impact. The 2nd I liked better, probably due to the pose, but your eyes are to soft focused, maybe more impact if they were sharper.

I like the first one. I think you successfully pulled off the classic pose and look, like the old hollywood studio portraits. Perhaps a bit on the muted side, though.

As for the second, I agree with the other poster that it appears a little out of focus, especially the eyes. And although I find the expression puzzling, I don't find it as intereresting or pleasing as the expression in the first pic.

Sarah, I like IR's about as much as anyone, but they don't do justice to portraiture. There are those who are crazy about IR people portraits, but I think they make people look like their skin is made out of cement.

Your composition is good, I'll have to say that. (would rather see them in B&W, or sepia, selenium, mixed color, etc.)

For some Fine Art IR's (meaning some nudity about), there's:

...but even the pro's that post their stuff there can't seem to get much emotion out of those shots, IMO. And that's with professional models, controlled lighting, and backdrops/backgrounds that have been thoughtfully set up in advance. There just seems to be something, well, de-humanizing about the IR wavelengths for people as subject matter. This again, is just my opinion.

For landscapes, I think IR's can evoke something more if the subject has the necessary clouds, green foliage, water, etc.

I agree with David generally that IR portrait shots don't "do it" for me because they do make people appear lifeless. But I think it works with the first picture to give it a classic feel, in the same way that sepia does, although not as warm, which may be the intended effect. The IR does make you look sort of vampiric in the second picture though, which I doubt was the intended effect.

Hi Sarah.

I find your portraits (particularly the second one) very good. It is very interesting how the IR powerfully highlights your eyes. The skin looks certainly pale, but the contrast with hair and eyes works very good, IMHO.

Best Regards!

If you want to look pouty, these are a great success. Technically of course they're super, and the eyes in both are really compelling. But the overall pose and contrasting lipstick aren't terribly attractive.

it's about finding beauty in the commonplace.

I don't think they show your beauty.

I can appreciate your longing for expression, and again you have succeeded. Both shots exude a certain longing for the inexplicable, and you have succeeded to show that certain mystery. Above all you are an artist sure and true. You target your vision and you succeed.

I love the shots! Spooky, surreal almost Vampiric like...especially the eyes. I'm sure the goth fans would love to have you create portraits of them this way...
