Olympus XZ-1: Horizontal lines on images and over exposure

I am new here so I hope I've posted this in the right place.

I've recently purchased an XZ-1 as a compact second camera to go alongside my Nikon D5100. I bought the camera used, but described as in "perfect working order".

Today I have been experimenting with some test shots and I'm getting some very strange images. I've tried P, A, S and M modes; the issues don't seem to be specific to any particular mode.

Several of the images, although not all, are coming out with horizontal lines all over the picture. Others are coming out with the lines and what seems to be extreme over exposure. Others come out looking pretty normal (or at least I think; I have no experience with this camera to know how images should look if all is well, if that makes sense).

I can't seem to identify a pattern to the problem, but a few times I have taken a shot followed by a second identical shot (not moving or re-composing, all settings the same); one of the images has had the problems described above and the other looks pretty normal.

I've tried running the Pixel Mapping function but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Here are some examples of the problem. Sometimes the dodgy picture is the first of the two; sometimes it is the second. Image Stabilizer was set to On for all pictures.

f/1.8, 1/100 sec, ISO-200

f/2.5, 1/100 sec, ISO-200

f/2.5, 1/125 sec, ISO-200

Here is 100% crop of the lines from the lens cap image:

Does anyone have any advice/suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance,
