Holding brolly and camera may be awkward. Other rain ideas?

Sure. Grow a third hand.

I once found and bought a gadget that fastens into the tripod socket and holds a small umbrella over the camera. That's the good news. The bad news is that it didn't work worth a damn. For me, rain is OK, an umbrella is all it takes. Rain and wind: no go. That's where you need the third hand. A clear filter doesn't do the job; it just collects the raindrops in front of the lens.
