I used the auto flashes for the first 10 years or so and got very proficient with them. Having said that, I prefer the ttl flashes today. Ttl with flash exposure compensation is very flexible without having to change shutter and aperture settings. The one exception is using the old style flashes with wireless triggers which is a much cheaper way to shoot. Even so, I use them primarily with power adjustments and not with the auto feature.
