What still puzzles me is how the ISO seemed to be locked at 12,800 for every one of the 54 images. I would think that the metering algorithms would recalculate exposure during the pauses. I did not shoot all 54 in one burst. There were pauses and breaks, although very short.

You're right, if you lift the finger completely, the metering should restart when you press the shutter again. All 54 images consistently overexposed, that sounds like a freak accident to happen.

If you'd maybe share one of the images, full EXIF data included, a lot could be read from it to determine the cause.

I will move away from spot metering and be more careful when I do use it.

That is always a good idea being careful with spot metering.
