Portrait lens?

I would like to know what people prefer to use as a portrait lens.  I do not know much about portraits but usually take the pictures at family get togethers.  I have heard that 85 mm is a good length and that a short telephoto lens has the effect of flattening the face which may be completely wrong.  Also there is a conversion for digital cameras due to sensor size being smaller than equivalent film but it seems to me it would result in a crop out of the center so an 85 mm is still an 85 mm with a crop which would not affect the image other than losing the perimeter.  I have also heard that soft focus can be achieved in PP.  I have a K-01 with manual  28 mm , 50 mm, 100 mm, and 135 mm  lenses.

ANSWER:
Pentax K-01
