My "standard zoom" is the EF24-105L. Wide open you can knock the background OOF if you have enough subject/background distance. It balances nicely on the 5D2.

When I switch from the zoom to a prime I'm ether looking for less DOF or more light. I just added a EF35/F2IS for my 'wide end'.
