I claim it and I make my living doing it. At least, I claim that the are only rarely necessary and only if you do certain things or use certain equipment. Not all photographers do.

US humanitarian photojournalist Karl Grobl (for example) is on record saying he does not even own a tripod and no one who has seen his work would claim he "doesn't do much photography".
