My main disappointment with the G1 X is the optical viewfinder, which I find to be nearly useless. As I mostly shoot landscapes, that forces me to rely on the screen for framing shots -- except I can barely see it in bright sunlight. I much prefer the low-resolution EVF in my SX40.
Have you tried the Ricoh GV-2 28 mm OVF in the hotshoe? It is tiny and superb optically. I got the idea from Amin Sabet at Serioius Compacts.com in his video review of the G1X, which is worth viewing..
To keep it in the shoe, use a rubber band around the base, as Ray Sachs demonstrated and as i posted on this forum. Simple and elegant.
The green light showing that focus has been achieved is easily seen with peripheral vision when using the GV-2.
I do a lot of my travel photography at 28mm so this OVF helps me a lot. At other focal lengths I simply use the great articulating LCD in the horizontal posiiton. Works well for me.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the thing costs half as much as the whole f'n' camera!
Doug,
Yes it does cost $200 to $229 these days. That is an important point.
But of course it is not specific to the G!X: it can be used on any camera that has a 28mm lens or a zoom that starts at 28mm and has a hot shoe..
For example the Nikon A. And some of the Ricoh compacts. Or the G12, G15, or EOS M. So when a person changes cameras, the GV-2 might still be handy.
And it is cheaper than many other add-on OVF's. And much much smaller, and has great optics.
But at the price it's not for everyone.
As for me, I usually prefer to work around the limitations of a camera I like, if I can, rather than buying a new camera and learning to become comfortable using it all over again. Too much expense and too much work. For me. Others will no doubt have other preferences in this matter.
