I'm just a lowly hobbyist taking pictures of my kids and family. No doubt, I could do well with the f4IS, however, I am often surprised to find myself at f/2.8 regularly (either to keep high shutter speeds, in lousy lighting or for portraits). This is on a 5D2. Perhaps, when I upgrade to a 5D4 in a few years, the need will be less. The weight is a non issue for with the Black Rapid strap, so price was the only downside. For my kind of pictures, I find that changing lenses often means missed shots. It's my do-it-all lens, coupled with the 24-70II and a 35L.
