What you heard may be an urban legend... in most developed countries it would even be illegal for a manufacturer to not honor a warranty, even if they called their lenses an accessory.

A product is supposed to perform and last under "normal use".  Normal use does include attaching and removing a filter, as it has a filter thread for that purpose.  So you should not need to hide that fact.  That one was just too fragile, and they should be made to take their responsibilities for that.

But as for all warranty repairs, you need to submit to whatever procedures they impose on you when honoring said warranty.  If they want to see the body, it may be to see if the whole kit was dropped or something.

I hate it when they over-use plastic... it makes it all look like a disposable product, rather than something that is serious and can be trusted to last.  It's a pity really.
