I've just compared my 12 MP Nikon D700 with my brother's 36MP D800.

On my (excellent) monitor we could detect no real difference in IQ generally and just the tiniest hint of more detail in the odd place from the D800.

I've never tried printing at bigger than A3, but at this size, D700 images are wonderful.

Given any camera processor, fewer pixels equals better high ISOs and more ability to lift shadows.

If Olympus and/or Panasonic can develop better processors, I'd want them to limit their sensors to the current 16 MP and give us better IQ rather than more pixels and similar IQ.

There are optimists and there are realists

I often have to resort to cropping my D600 images because even a 300mm lens does not have enough reach.  So if you crop that D700 12MP image down to 6 MP, my bet is you will notice a lot more noise, and often you won't be happy with resolution.
