If you are speaking broadly about storing your files in the cloud, yes it could be a nightmare and you should always keep your own files locally, of course.

If you are speaking about Adobe, understand that the programs run on your local computer, and your files live on your local computer. Despite the name, the cloud aspects are optional.

But, your local software must "call home" every 30 days to verify that you are still paying (customers in a yearly contract have some more leeway on this-- I have seen 99 days and 180 days). So if Adobe suddenly went belly-up (unlikely) or their verification servers shut down, or something like that, what would happen if your local software called home and got no response? Would your local software continue to work, or refuse to work? I don't know the answer to that.
