There are also twice as many green pixels in a Bayer configuration. The Bayer, XTrans and EXR sensors all have twice as many green pixels than either red or blue. But the number of green pixels is not the problem at all, it's how it's arranged. Like I illustrated in my original post, notice the BIG 2x2 green block in the middle of the 6x6 X-Trans array

Now, let's see how it looks in a much larger array:

Can you see it now? You get huge 2x2 green blocks that are just 1 pixels apart AND adjacent to another solitary green!

Demoisaicing such a pattern is very non-trivial at best.
