Sobering Market Data

If you go to the Sony Rumors web site, there are some interesting and sobering data presented.

These are from CIPA, the Japanese agency.

For 2012, digital camera sales were off 44% over 2011.

Compact cameras were off 50% and that's attributed to inroads made by Smart Phones.

DSLR and MILC sales were off 25%, attributed to saturation of the systems camera market.

The only growth was in high end cameras and lenses.  +14.1% for FF lenses.

-21% for APS-C lenses

Canon has 52.2% of the DSLR market, Nikon 33.6%, Sony 6.1%, Pentax/Ricoh 4.5% based on the top 20 sellers which are 96.4% of the market.

In mirrorless, Olympus has 28.8%, Panasonic 21.4%, Sony 18.4%, Nikon 13.3%, Pentax 7.1%, and Canon 2.1% based on the top 20 sellers which are 91.1% of the total market.

There was some similar data published as sales by quarter in an earlier thread.  It correlated fairly well with these data in showing some decline.  That data showed no clear pattern in DSLR Vs MILC sales as a 5 of total sales.  Unfortunately, the CIPA data doesn't show relative sales of DSLR Vs MILC.

The question now is what the various players are going to do about it.  There are rumors on the Panasonic forums and other places, that Panasonic is considering pulling out of the market.  Canon and Nikon own the DSLR market; but the other players have to be sweating.  Sony DSLR + SLT sales are down to 6.1% of a shrinking market, from 7.8% in 2010.  I'd love to be a fly on the wall of their boardroom.  Pentax's 7.1% of the mirrorless market is due mainly to the Q series (82%) and the K01 has been dropped.

If you were on the Board of these companies, what would you recommend?
