Some of the advice in this thread is wildly snobbish.

+1 for Bill's comment.  Start with something relatively inexpensive that meets the requirements for the class.  Take the class; get out and shoot a lot of photographs.  Even if you buy "only" an A55 or A57, it will take you years to completely master that camera.  Concentrate on learning the basics of photography, passing the class, and hopefully having some fun while doing so.
