It sounds like you may not have Auto-FP sync enabled on your camera? When you select a sync speed in the Nikon menus, you should see an option to enable that. Note this is different from HyperSync, but if you want your Nikon flash to fire above the sync speed, you should set 1/250 (Auto FP), which will use Nikon's High Speed Sync feature.

Or, since you are testing Pocketwizard's HyperSync feature, you could use the PocketWizard utility to never use High Speed Sync and only use HyperSync, this is an option in one of the tabs. With that set, the TT1/TT5's should always fire and use HyperSync.

High Speed Sync (also known as FP sync) is Nikon's system that pulses the speedlight instead of firing in one burst, this has nothing to do with Pocketwizards.

HyperSync is Pocketwizard's system of taking advantage of the fact that flash bursts are not instantaneous, so the flash is triggered right before the shutter opens and continues throughout the exposure.

I've had mixed results with HyperSync. It does work to some extent, but if you look closely the frame is not evenly illuminated, there's kind of a gradient across the frame which may or may not be noticeable, I would only use it in a pinch.
