I'm not a NYC resident but I often visit and often take my camera - so my top tips are:

- Great views of the skyline are to be had from Brooklyn, or from the Jersey City shore

- I wouldn't go to the Statue of Liberty for photos (too close up for my taste, and the lines/queues are long) but the Staten Island ferry is a good idea if the weather is good.  You won't get much time to compose your skyline shots though. The ferry is free, so you can sail back & forth as much as you like

- Greenwich Village is good for street photography

- South Street Seaport is a good place to get photos of the East River, the bridges and the old sailing ships, although the shopping/market area is a bit tacky for my taste

- Central Park is a great place to snap people, and the surrounding buildings look nice as they light up at sunset

- I prefer the views from the top of the Rockefeller Building to ESB, but that's just me
