I think there is some benefit from a large front element, as well as more exotic materials use to make the lenses and coatings. The dxomark scores measure the actual wide open light gathering capability for a lens:

There has to be a compromise somewhere-- T-stop, CA, sharpness, and size make for a tough balance. Add coatings for flare-- less light. Add APO elements for CA-- less light.
