In case you want a solution and not just belly aching

Magic lantern provides a frimware, which amongst many other extremely useful feautures, supports intervelometer.  hte chdk firmware is also available for most canon cameras (not dslr).

I would also strongly suggest a 25 dollar ebay wired remote release with itnervelometer function.  a wired remote to me is a must, but then again, I shoot landscape.

However, if this post is primarily to complain about canon, then cheers.
