By "automatic" what the really mean is your retail full electronic control (i.e. aperture control and autofocus). The autofocus wouldn't be as important because you'll want manual focus for macro anyways because you wouldn't be able to focus to infinity with the extension tube. With the cheaper tube set without the electronic contacts, you would have to mount the lens on the camera, set the desired aperture, dismount the lens and mount extension tube and lens every time you wanted to change the aperture.
