Tamron 18-270 to replace broken Nikon 18-200

The quote for repairing my Nikon 18-200 is too high to be worth while. I need a replacement lens for using on my Nikon D40 and D5100 whilst back packing. The Tamron 18-270 has been suggested and it is very light - an important consideration. Does anyone know how the IQ compares to my old Nikon 18-200?

The "experts" always say that the IQ of that lens is suspect but it was always good enough for me. Is the IQ of the Tamron noticeably worse?

Thanks if anyone can help.
