EOS utility and liveview shoot overexposure

I'm using my 450D to digitise slides and negatives, using a Durst M605 color enlarger as light source and MicroNikkor (fully manual) macro lens. To improve results I have started with tethered shooting using EOS Utility (latest version). The 450D is in M model. The idea is to get perfect focus and as good as possible white balance before transfering images to DPP/Photoshop. The camera is lying on its back underneath the color enlarger head, so I can't check what is displayed in the viewfinder or on the back LCD.

I'm running into a strange problem: everything seems to work fine except for exposure. When I set exposure using the Liveview preview window, the captured image will be overexposed by about three stops. For a good exposure in the preview window (histogram looks fine too) I need about 1/4 sec exposure time, but the captured image needs about 1/30 sec for best exposure. So after making all the adjustments in Liveview, I have to change exposure (Liveview window gets very dark) to get a more or less correctly exposed image - this issue makes tethered shooting quite a hassle.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a known bug? I haven't used tethered shooting before but checked all the settings ...
