Do we really need expensive lens? 16 large pictures to view with kit lens

I've always found it to be sharp, and gave me some nice photos if it was bright enough.

But once you loose that tropical sun, and it gets even just overcast, thing get to be dull and boring in a hurry with the 18-55.  It seems to be that lack of micro contrast thing the other guy brought up.

I don't have any Zeiss lenses, or any G lenses, but with the lower cost f2.8 zooms I've got, and the older Minolta primes, even most of the Minolta zooms, I've found much more capable lenses than the 18-55 and really don't have any reason to ever put it in my camera bag. I've always got something else that's either faster (f2.8 or a fast prime) or has a wider zoom range that I'd never have the need to grab it.

But under a tropical sun it is capable of showing some color.
