Tripod w/Brace for 7D and 70-200 f/2.8 USM IS II
I need a tripod that is rock solid to hold steady 7D and 70-200 f/2.8 USM IS II.
Just about any reputable tripod should handle that combo when attached to the lens foot. The Gitzo GT2531 is more than adequate when using the Markins Q20 ball head even when using a 1D series body
The OTHER issue is that when the mount is to the lens or body alone with wind you still get shake.
You not only need a good tripod but also a sturdy head. Strong winds may upset even the best tripods so there are ways to stabilize them by using weights as the previous poster suggested. In extreme conditions even lowering the camera by compressing the legs may be another solution and never use the center column.
Is there a brace that ties the camera and the lens together to stop and or reduce shake?
The lens mount should be sufficient unless yours is loose then I'd try other lenses to determine if the lens or body is suspect and have it repaired. When properly set in the mount there shouldn't be any movement.....
