M16 receiver is made of metal, as is the bolt, magazine, and any part that takes a direct shock from firing a bullet like the barrel.  The 5.56mm round is low impact compared to the 7.62NATO or 30-06.  The plastic parts on an M16 takes that place of wood on the M1A1 and the M14.
