How to light black metal objects?

All that did (apart from taking out unwanted content) was put a bit of extra light on the stonework and shade down some other areas. Stuff I could have done on an enlarger. Thing is, there was nothing wrong with the basic lighting, in terms of the modelling on the guy's face, for example, as far as I could see.

If the entire 'lighting' had consisted of on-camera flash then it would have been a major retouching job at best, impossible at worst to get it looking right.
