You're quite right about different cameras appealing to different folks. One of my favorites happens to be the G15. I have owned the G5, G6, G7, G9, G11, G12, and now the G15. I actually preferred the G11 over the G12 (a matter of subtle differences in feel and handling), so my G11 came after the G12.
My interest in the G series has been high quality images in a light and fairly compact package. Personally, I was glad to see the lower weight and slimmer profile in the G15. It actually fits in a shirt pocket, although it usually dangles from my neck on a lanyard attached to the right hand strap lug.
I have used the G1X; but it's size and weight turned me off - I'd just as soon carry my DSLR with the 18-135 lens. But that's why there are so many different models on the market.
I just don't understand the removal of the articulated screen. It couldn't have made the camera that much larger. The G series isn't supposed to be small, if one wants a pocketable camera thats what the S100 and S110 are for. I also don't understand the higher noise levels at lower ISO's on the G15, especially when the S100 and the S110 (which have a similar sensor) have lower noise. The way I feel about is if I'm spending that much on a camera, I want it to do everything that my a620 can do, and more. And with the higher noise at low ISOs and the fixed screen, the G15 falls short. I know Canon did this to protect the G1X. If I were shopping around for a new G series model, I'd probably get the G1X, which is more than twice the camera the G15 is (and while expensive, isnt twice the price).
The articulated screen is a must, for me, period. Often landscapes such as lakes are surrounded by shrubs and trees, and are only open below 3 feet, with a flip screen I can get the shot without kneeling down on the mud. Same goes for flower macros. I guess it just depends on what you use it for, for me, trees, plants, and landscapes come at different heights, and I need the flexibility of that flip screen.
