You definitely want studio lighting for portraiture but those hot-shoe flash units will make good accent, hair, and background lights. The ability to control the spread of light by using the zoom makes hot-shoe flash units very nice for these uses.

For location shooting they will work as main and fill lights but expect to do a lot more test shots to get the lighting right and to use a higher ISO value.
