I'm not really into "zooming" in to see the detail (apart from when testing) as I see the whole point of an ("art") photograph to be the overall composition rather than the detail.

Hence the importance of the print to me (and a "stood back" viewing position).  But, yes, as you say, if panning and zooming around an electronic image is what one wants to do, the more resolution the better.
