On my one safari (through Namibia and Botswana) I was often using a 500mm plus a 1.4 converter to secure the kind of bird images I wanted. Even on large mammals the straight 500 came in really handy. Not saying you need to lug anything that big around, but there will be occasions when you want real reach so having 400mms available would be good.

500mm f/4 Hi!

I've been to Africa only once (Tanzania),

I've had a 200-400VR, but took the 500VR with me as my long lens (on a D4).

For me, I'd pack the 500VR every time over the 200-400VR.

D4, 1/4000s, f/5, 500mm, ISO 2000

This picture is about 50% cropped....

At times, I just needed  the  reach, and frequently used the 1.4 TC, and a few times the 2x TC.

My second body (D3) was for my other lenses (10.5, 24-70, 70-200VR , Zeiss 100/2))

Take two bodies, and on one, the best and longest lens that you can afford, and are willing to carry.
