Go easy on your HDD

Don't turn off your computer. Ever. It has sleep modes that bring the power dissipation down to a trickle and stop the HDD from spinning. It likes to check up on itself when you are idle. It likes to use all of its memory for frequently-accessed bits of software. You should be running an automated backup every night. And your HDD hates to have to reload all those routines every morning. I don't blame it for quitting on you. I never turn off my computers and I have never had an HDD failure.
