The D90 has pretty good Auto WB. You might want something different under some circumstances but the Auto WB should give you something which looks reasonably good. I'd suggest that the problem may lie elsewhere, maybe some setting which you haven't thought of. It's second hand; have you set everything back to factory defaults before trying things, to eliminate what the previous owner might have set?

One thing you might check is Active D-lighting. It's great for altering the dynamic range so that you get less in the way of blown highlights or black shadows, but it does tend to give rather flat results; the assumption is that you'll want to liven things up in software afterwards. If it's on try turning it off.
