18-300mm or AF-S 80-400mm?

Bit of a daft question because they are two very different lenses I know.

I am thinking of purchasing a new D7100 later this year and I had it in mind to get the 18-300mm vr lens with it. I already own the 18-200mm vr so I thought the new combo put together would give me a lot more reach.

Now that the new and long awaited 80-400mm af-s is now with us I maybe thought I'd be better of with that because I do a lot of birding. I currently use my 70-200mm f2.8 vr for birding.

Only problem is that the 80-400mm af-s is vastly more expensive. I've got a price of £2500 GBP, ouch!.

Does anyone know how it performs with converters?
