The truth about D800 Noise

In RAW, D800 and 5DmkII have identical pixel noise at identical shooting parameters, after image brightness is made to match. This is a fact established by several testing laboratories, incl. DxO.

However, because the D800 has many more pixels, the D800 wins hands down in image noise.

Moreover, even at the pixel level, the D800 has MUCH better dynamic range at all ISO. So, if you look at the noise in darker parts of your images, the diference will be stunning.

FW has nothing to do with it. It only effects the rendition of JPGs out of the camera.

However, the raw converter DOES play a role here, esp. if honoring in-camera noise suppression settings. You are comparing using the same raw converter, do you?

Yes, visible pixel noise at ISO 400 and above is normal and has always been. But with 36MP, you have to go to very high ISO to see it in a printed image.
