If you don't photograph for a living, doing adjustments by eye can get you quite far. Laptop screens generally aren't very good so that's a limiting factor, but the already listed Lagom site is very good. Another one I use for checking gamma is http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

Gamma is probably the problem factor if you see problems with brightness.

On my Dell IPS the colors after manual calibrations were so good that calibrating with Spyder3 Elite led to no visible changes except with the most strict test patterns.
